Celebrate Presidents’ Day with the Hometown President | February 9, 2018

White House Historical Association to Unveil Official 2018 Ornament Honoring President Truman

Independence, Mo. – The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is hosting a Presidents’ Day celebration, Monday, Feb. 19. The White House Historical Association will unveil the official 2018 White House ornament that honors President Harry S. Truman at 10 a.m. The day will conclude with a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. focused on the relationship between the president and the press.

2018 WHITE HOUSE ORNAMENT HONORING PRESIDENT TRUMAN – 10 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

The White House Historical Association will unveil the Official 2018 White House Christmas Ornament, honoring the presidency of Harry S. Truman. The ornament unveiling will feature remarks from Association President Stewart McLaurin and Director of the Truman Library, Dr. Kurt Graham. The program will also include a special display of photos of the Truman White House renovation and Truman family heirlooms including a Christmas tree ornament and a silver tray that was a Christmas gift from White House staff.

The White House Christmas ornament first launched in 1981 has become a sought-after and beloved collector’s item, allowing admirers of the history and elegance of the White House to share the traditions of the holidays. Each year’s ornament honors an individual president or a significant White House anniversary, with this year focused on President Harry S. Truman.

 

THE PRESIDENCY AND THE PRESS – 6:30 p.m. Program | 6 p.m. Reception

The Truman Library and Truman Library Institute will host a special Presidents’ Day public program called The Presidency and the Press, featuring a panel discussion focused on the complicated relationship between the White House Press Corps and the president. The panel will feature:

  • Major Garrett, Chief White House Correspondent with CBS News and Correspondent at Large with National Journal
  • Karen Ball, former White House Correspondent for the Daily News in New York
  • Zeke Miller, White House Correspondent for the Associated Press
  • Betty Winfield, mass media history expert and author of FDR and the News Media
  • Margaret Talev, President of the White House Correspondents’ Association and White House Correspondent for Bloomberg News, panel moderator 

The Presidency and the Press will take place at the Truman Library at 6:30 p.m., with a free reception preceding at 6 p.m. The event is free, but RSVPs are requested.
