John B. TaylorThe 2015 Truman Medal for Economic Policy will be awarded to economist John Taylor in recognition of his extraordinary career as an economic policy developer, public servant and educator. The award will be presented during an October 14, 2015 luncheon at the InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza.

Participants in the event will include John Sherman, chairman of the board of the Truman Library Institute; Dr. Dave Cornell, associate dean of the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri-Kansas City; David Giuntoli, chairman of the Missouri Council on Economic Education; John Yorke, president of The Economic Club of Kansas City; and Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Esther George.

The Truman Medal for Economic Policy provides a forum to recognize exceptional economic policy contributions. The award’s name reflects the role President Harry S. Truman played in the creation of the Council of Economic Advisers. The Truman Medal for Economic Policy recognizes John B. Taylor’s career as an educator, economic policy developer and public servant. Taylor’s research, teaching and writing have contributed to the considerations economists and policy makers use in evaluating and determine monetary policy actions. Taylor is probably best known for his “Taylor Rule,” which is used by central banks throughout the world.

Taylor has been active in public policy, having served as senior economist at the Council of Economic Advisors during the Ford and Carter administrations, as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors during the George H.W. Bush administration, and as Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs during the George W. Bush administration.

John Taylor has written or co-authored 14 books on economic and financial matters. In addition, he has written hundreds of economic papers and academic journal articles. As an educator, Taylor has been a professor of economics at Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University and Stanford University (having been at Stanford for the last 30 years).

The Truman Medal is awarded every two years to recipients chosen by a committee established by the sponsoring organizations, which include the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri—Kansas City, The Economic Club of Kansas City, and the Missouri Council on Economic Education. Past honorees include Alan Greenspan (2005), George P. Schultz (2007), Paul Volcker (2009), Allan Meltzer (2011), and Alice Rivlin (2013).
