Truman Library Unveils New Exhibition on Truman’s World War I Service | March 1, 2018

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is unveiling a new special exhibition highlighting Harry Truman’s service in World War I. “’Heroes or Corpses’: Captain Truman in World War I” opens to the public March 10, and media are invited to an advance preview Friday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to noon.

This new exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of Truman’s service in the Great War through never-before-exhibited photographs, personal letters and more than 40 artifacts from Truman’s personal World War I collection. World War I helped transform Truman into one of the most respected presidents in our nation’s history, and this year only, visitors can view this fascinating story at the Truman Library.

“The exhibition will tell the story of Truman’s enlistment, training and combat in World War I, but it will also focus on the experiences he had that helped mold him into a leader,” said Clay Bauske, curator at the Truman Library. “While he never envisioned being president, many of the lessons he learned in the war prepared him for the challenges that he would later face as president.”

“Heroes or Corpses” runs March 10 to December 31, 2018, and entry is included in museum admission and free for Truman Library Institute members.
