Meet the Truman Library Institute’s Speakers Bureau team — Alex Burden, Cassie Pikarsky, and Stacy Benson. With advanced degrees in history and museum studies, they are dedicated to preserving and sharing the enduring legacy of President Harry S. Truman.

Alex Burden

Alex Burden has led the Truman Library Institute, the nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, for 20 years. Under his leadership, the Institute has provided financial, programmatic, creative, and staffing support that has transformed the Truman Library from an archival institution into a dynamic center for learning, where visitors explore America’s past to better understand and shape its future. Alex Burden has led the Truman Library Institute, the nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, for 20 years. Under his leadership, the Institute has provided financial, programmatic, creative, and staffing support that has transformed the Truman Library from an archival institution into a dynamic center for learning, where visitors explore America’s past to better understand and shape its future.

Most recently, Burden led the Institute’s efforts to raise more than $55 million through the 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign, which funded the Library’s $30 million renovation. He also oversaw the commissioning of statues of President Truman for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and Truman Hall, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO’s residence in Brussels. In addition, he led the Institute in hosting the Truman Civil Rights Symposium, marking the 75th anniversary of President Truman’s desegregation of the military and featuring a keynote address by the President of the United States.

Alex holds both a B.A. and M.A. in History from the University of Kansas. His graduate work received top departmental recognition, including the Robert L. Greaves Award for the most outstanding master’s thesis in History. His historical interests now include President Truman, post World War II foreign policy, and military history.

Before joining the Institute, Burden served as Senior Vice President for Hartsook Companies and as Vice President of Development at Bishop Miege.

Cassie Pikarsky

Cassie Pikarsky is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Truman Library Institute. In this role, she served as project lead for the $30-million renovation of the Truman Library, managed the commission of a statue of President Truman installed in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., in 2022 and Truman Hall in Brussels, Belgium, in 2024, and organized the Truman Civil Rights Symposium commemorating President Truman’s desegregation of the U.S. military by executive order and featuring keynote remarks from the President of the United States. She rejoined the Truman Library Institute in 2018 after beginning her career with the Institute as a two-time college intern.Prior to returning to work for the 33rd president, she managed The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures’ first public capital campaign, implemented a name change and rebranding, and served on the renovation team for an $8-million upgrade to the facility and re-envisioning of the exhibits. She has an MBA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, an MA in History Museum Studies from the State University of New York at Oneonta, and a BA in History and Business from Truman State University.

Stacy Benson

Stacy Benson is the Learning and Community Engagement Director at the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, the nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum. Drawing on more than a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, grant writing, and community engagement, she develops programs and partnerships inspired by President Truman’s life and legacy to deepen civic learning and connect teachers, students, and the broader community with the region’s central classroom for democracy. Stacy holds a B.S. in Secondary Teaching from Baylor University, where she was named Texas State Student Teacher of the Year in 1991, and an M.A. in History from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. Her master’s thesis, “India Edwards and American Women in Politics, 1940–1977,” was researched at the Truman Library. She began her career as a secondary educator and continues to translate complex historical questions into meaningful, accessible learning experiences for audiences of all ages.
