Truman Library to Close for Major Renovation on July 22 | July 16, 2019

The Library Will Transform in Commemoration of 75th Anniversary of Truman Becoming President

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Monday, July 22, is the last day to visit the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum before it closes for approximately a year for a major renovation. The $30-million transformation is planned to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Truman becoming president in 1945.

The Truman Library will offer visitors free admission from July 20 to 22 to allow as many people as possible to visit before the closure. The final weekend also marks the 75th anniversary of Truman accepting the Democratic nomination for Vice President of the United States on July 21, 1944.

The renovation will ensure that the dynamic educational center that President Truman created will continue to inform, inspire, educate and engage a 21st-century audience. This ambitious project is part of a $30 million capital campaign that includes the new Truman permanent exhibition and other strategic improvements, enhanced education programs, expanded public programs and endowment support. The museum transformation and upgrades to the visitor experience are expected to be completed in 2020.

The Truman Library will continue to host public programs, including monthly off-site History Happy Hour programs that explore issues ranging from gender equality in the military to the relationship between World War I and Prohibition. The White House Decision Center will also provide interactive educational experiences off-site.

The Truman Library is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. Until July 20, admission to the Library is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $3 for children ages 6 to 15 and free for children under 5. From July 20 through 22, admission is free for all.
